Technical education in India contributes a momentous share to the overall education system and plays a pivotal role in the social and economic development of the country. The commencement of formal technical education in India can be dated back to establishment of the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) in 1945. This statutory body was set up for proper planning and coordinated development of the technical education system all across the country. The AICTE strives to maintain the quality of technical education in India. It is vested with legislative authority for planning, formulation and maintenance of norms and standards, quality assurance through accreditation, funding in priority areas, monitoring and evaluation, maintaining uniformity of certification and ensuring integrated development and management of technical education in India. To ensure that synchronised development of technical education is achieved, it is important for educational institutions to receive the AICTE accreditation.
